Breastfeeding Tips

Breastfeeding or nursing, although proven to be beneficial, still remains a very controversial and touching topic. Many women struggle with the decision to nurse, specifically the emotional, and physical components that come with it. In order to have the most success, and the least headache, there are some facts, and techniques you should know, and some supplies you should acquire. Prior to leaving the hospital, you can ask to speak to a lactation specialist. This person is trained to assist you with proper latching, and sucking techniques, and help answer any questions you may have. In certain cases, nursing is not recommended, and they can help you with that as well. One special concern that can be discussed with a lactation specialist is whether to continue to breast feed if you become pregnant. Many doctors believe that nursing while pregnant is safe, but it remains debatable. In several cases, your child will choose to wean themselves when this occurs. What supplies do you need? Many parenting books can provide an extensive list, but the bare minimum to get started is:

  1. A Nursing Bra-more than one would be better. A nursing bra will not only assist you in the nursing process, but is designed to provide comfort and protection in-between feedings.
  2. A Breast Pump- You will need to build up a supply of milk for the times that you are not available. There are manual or electric pumps ranging in price, but all remain effective. Decide what your budget is, and when you will use it. If you will need to pump in a public place, some of the fast and pricey electric pumps may be too loud. Shop around early for this product if possible, so you have enough time to choose the one that is right for you, your child, and any future children you may have.
  3. Breast Pads- A breast pad will help protect you from leaking breast milk on your clothes at the worst time. Most pads are sold in packs of three or more, are affordable, and best of all washable.

The one tool that will get you through the nursing process is patients. Try to relax. Stress can cause a depletion of your milk supply. Teaching your child to nurse can take some practice, and in some cases weeks. Although any amount of breast milk is beneficial, most medical organizations recommend you nurse for at least six weeks. As far as the duration, that varies greatly depending on who you ask. Some say six months, some say two years, but it really depends on what works for you and your family. The nutrients your child receives do not diminish over time, but your growing child (six months or older), may require nutrients and fat found in table foods to aid in their growth. Dos and Don’ts. Any mother with previous nursing experience will offer up some tips on what to do, and not to do, but keep in mind, they are just suggestions.

  1. Do drink plenty of fluids. Hydrating your body will aid in the production of milk, and keep you healthy.
  2. Do get as much rest as you can. Sleep when your baby sleeps, nap whenever possible, and get to sleep at night as soon as possible. You never know when your baby will wake you up to feed again.
  3. Do ask for help. It can be difficult to admit that you can not do it all on your own. If you need help, but do not ask for it, you or your child may deal with unnecessary stresses that could affect you both.
  4. Don’t seclude yourself from family and friends. It may be tempting to hang out at home all day in you PJ’s, but not necessarily good. You child needs the social stimulation of the outside world, and you need to interact with friends and family which has been known to ease postpartum depression.
  5. Don’t indulge in drinking alcohol or smoking of any kind. This is harmful to your child, and can cause a decrease in milk production.
  6. Don’t rush the process. Trying to rush your child through the feeding will never work. No child is the same, so the time it takes to nurse him/or her is different. Try not to schedule anything during or after feeding time, and if possible, make sure you always have time to nurse, wherever you may be.

There are obvious benefits to breastfeeding. It helps strengthen your baby’s immune system, and can be cost effective as well. In the end, the decision to breast feed is very personal, and complex. Talk it out, ask questions, read and learn all you can. Then you can choose a feeding method that is right for you.
