Muscle power
Breasts are not made of muscle - they're just fat and connective tissue
- but a little of the right kind of exercise can still help. The
pectoral muscles, which lie under the breasts, on the ribcage, can be
toned up to give breasts a firm foundation and improve their shape.
Swimming will develop the pecs, or grasp your forearms just below the
elbow and tighten your grip ten times.
Back to bra basics
Jill Kenton, the director of my favourite lingerie shop, Rigby & Peller,
always says she can tell which customers wear the right size bra,
because their breasts are firmer. `A well-fitting bra is essential to
help slow down the impact of gravity and maintain a nice shape. B cups
and over should never go without a bra,' she says. The most common
mistake women make is to go up in inches but not in cup size. If your
bra rides up at the back, you need a smaller back size; if you have
strap marks on your shoulders or marks around the breasts, you need a
larger cup size.
Hormone control
According to naturopath Kate Troup, who works at London's Apotheke 20-
20 clinic (0181-995 2293), hormone-promoting supplements can give you
bigger, firmer breasts. She recommends Agnus castus, which increases
progesterone production, helping the breasts swell and firm up in the
same way as they do just before your period. It also increases
production of the hormone prolactin, which is thought to be responsible
for pregnant women's ballooning breasts.
Touch and tone
In what has to be the sexiest way to firm up your breasts,
aromatherapist Robert Tisserand has come up with this growth-promoting
massage oil recipe for us. Mix 30ml of grapeseed oil with the following
oestrogen-stimulating essential oils: three drops of rose and geranium,
five drops of clary sage and four drops of fennel. Use to massage the
breasts daily in a clockwise direction. `Oestrogen levels drop around
the time of the menopause, when many women notice their breasts lose
firmness,' says Robert. `If oestrogen is boosted in the breast area,
then it's possible firmness can be increased.'
Hot and cold comfort
If you can bear it, hot and cold water will restore tone to the breasts
by boosting circulation. Use facecloths to make hot and cold compresses
and apply alternately to the breasts, for 15 minutes. If you don't fancy
the DIY approach, try a French contraption called Rassodin Hydrotherapy
Bust Treatment, pounds 25 plus p&p, which you attach to the cold tap,
then place over the breasts to give them a freezing five-minute blast.
Breasts are said to become firmer within two weeks; call Jica Beauty on
0181-979 7261 for mail-order.
Pill-popping
If water torture doesn't appeal, good old evening primrose oil and
Vitamin E can be taken to strengthen the skin, improve elasticity and
give breasts a firmer appearance. The homoeopathic supplements silica
and calcium fluoride may also help. These minerals are used in collagen
synthesis, so could strengthen collagen in the body, potentially
promoting a firmer bust.
Lotions and potions
While no one has proved that these bust products actually work, many
users swear by them. Clarins Bust Beauty Gel, pounds 29, contains algae,
protein extract, chitin from the shell of crayfish, and witchhazel.
These are thought to improve the condition of skin cells, so firming the
bust area. Decleor Perfect Bust, pounds 25, is a mousse containing
kigelia, a fruit used by African women for centuries to tone and firm
the bust. Jolibust Gel, pounds 14.99, is a seaweed gel that can be used
in conjunction with the Jolibust self-adhesive firming bra, pounds 9.99,
to give an uplifted look. The `bra' consists of two disposable crescents
that support the breasts from underneath. Available by mail-order; call
01261-818003.
Pay the professionals
A trip to a salon is by far the priciest way to firm up, and will only
give your breasts a one-night boost - perfect for making an impact in a
sexy strapless party frock.
Thalgoptima puts a tiny electrical current through the skin to vibrate
the skin cells, giving a smoother, more youthful appearance and boosting
elasticity. The treatment costs pounds 34.50 at the Sanctuary in
London's Covent Garden (0171-420 5151).
The Thalabust Methode uses products containing fucus, a seaweed with
softening and anti-inflammatory properties, and laminaria, an algae that
stimulates the metabolism and the elimination of toxins. It costs pounds
20 at Thalac salons; call 01372-729629 for information.
The CACI Bust Treatment sends electrical impulses to tone the muscles
supporting the bust. It is also said to improve skin texture and
elasticity. One treatment costs pounds 30 at Elizabeth Arden Red Door
Salon in London (0171- 629 4488), or call CACI International on 0171-431
1033.
